Breakaway
oil on canvas mounted on panel, 16 x 12

In breakaway roping, men and women compete on equal terms - it's a race to rope the calf, then the rope is released once it's set. Setting the rope requires horse and rider to stop abruptly, which often means the horse does a fast sliding stop with lifting in the front - what fabulous action! This red-shirted roper on her shiny chestnut was too wonderful a subject to pass up.
