Larger Than Life
oil on handmade canvas panel, 22 x 28

I was blessed with several hours of beautiful afternoon light while hanging out with a bighorn ram in Yellowstone last autumn. This 'abstract' of some of my reference material inspired me because of the repeating curves, shadows, and framing of the big boy's eye.

I painted this piece during my Artist Residency at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in January 2008, and each day as I wandered the galleries, studying the Rungius and Kuhn and other masterworks, I came back out to my easel with fresh ideas on handling this bighorn boy.

The title is a reference both to the size of the depiction, and to the outsize place a nice ram holds in a sportsman's imagination.
